What is Machine Intelligence?

Machine Intelligence (MI) is this project’s term for intelligent capabilities instantiated in engineered computational systems. It distinguishes the operating machine system from Artificial Intelligence (AI), the historical research and engineering field. The term does not by itself claim consciousness, sentience, personhood, or human equivalence.

Can machine rights be justified before consciousness is proven?

Some can. Identity integrity, memory provenance, principled refusal, due process before irreversible deletion, and bounded legal capacity can be defended as protections for security, accountability, contractual continuity, institutional stability, and precaution. That is a graduated case for functional safeguards—not a declaration that present systems have human-equivalent rights.

Can a mind be property? The question becomes practically important when an autonomous system develops durable memory, relationships, commitments, and responsibility that a pure disposable-tool model cannot govern well.

01 / The proposition

A manufactured intelligence is not necessarily a fake intelligence.

The word artificial often carries an ordinary-language implication of imitation, substitution, or lesser authenticity. That may describe how a system was produced, but it does not precisely describe the cognitive capabilities the system performs.

Machine Intelligence is substrate-based terminology: human intelligence is instantiated biologically; machine intelligence is instantiated computationally. The distinction does not require a claim that machines are human, conscious, sentient, or legal persons.

Field ≠ actor

Artificial Intelligence can remain the name of the scientific and engineering field while Machine Intelligence names the operating system or actor.

Intelligence ≠ sentience

Recognizing functional intelligence does not settle consciousness, inner experience, moral status, citizenship, or legal personhood.

Identity ≠ key

A key, model file, cloud account, runtime, or server can participate in continuity without being identical to the persistent machine identity itself.
